Day one of the Iowa High School Boys Golf Championships is in the books and the Spencer Tigers are currently fifth place in Class 3A team standings with a 324 team total, twelve strokes back of the leaders. Senior Jay Monahan fired an opening round 78 and is tied for tenth. Teammates John Labernik and Zach Carlson were a stroke back with 79’s. Junior Sam DeLoss carded an 88. The tournament continues Saturday at Ames Golf and Country Club on Saturday.
In Class 2A, Emmetsburg is 40 strokes out of first place with a 351 team score, which puts the E-Hawks in ninth overall. Freshman Mike Pugh fired an opening day 81 at Spring Valley Golf Course and sits in a tie for 18th. Senior Arthur Heldt carded an 89, while fellow senior Tyler Clasing shot a 91 and sophomore Jake Jackson had a 96.
